We Started an Advocacy Go Fund Me!

Adoptee Advocates of Michigan is asking for help in funding our advocacy efforts to educate the public on adoptee rights and providing adoptee resources.

Most citizens in Michigan, as well as across the U.S., are not aware that adoptees have less rights than other US-born citizens. Many domestic adoptees are denied the right to obtain their own records, including their own original birth certificates. Many international adoptees also struggle to gain any information about their origins and are currently at risk of deportation if proper paperwork was not completed when they came to the United States. This unequal distribution of rights has been a long-standing source of pain and frustration for many adoptees. These rights include:

  • Knowledge of birth certificate

  • Knowledge of medical history

  • Knowledge of personal history, including biological parentage

  • Knowledge of racial and ethnic ancestry

  • Knowledge of birth parents and reason for placement

  • Knowledge of cultural identity and language

  • Knowledge of biological relations

  • Lack of secure U.S. citizenship.

Adoptee Advocates of Michigan, a core partner of the Michigan Adoptee Rights Coalition, has been approved to have an exhibit booths at multiple venues accross the state. These fairs will all be well attended, and we are excited to have this opportunity to educate the public about adoptee rights and provide resources to other adopted people in these communities. We will be featuring the initiaves of Michigan adoptees who are contributing to the wellbeing of our adopted community.

We could use help with recovering costs, and making this experience impactful to strengthen the voice of adopted people in our state and beyond.

We are also looking for volunteers who may be interested in helping at our booths. Stay tuned for more information on that as it develops.
